A Comprehensive List Of Search Engine Optimization Resources.

You could be referring back here for days, if not months!

Whilst I have listed below an exhaustive list of sites for you to visit with regard to resources for Search Engine Optimization (SEO), my immediate advice would be to steer clear!

You could easily get caught up, like so many other SEOers, in the whole trap of trying to second-guess the mighty Search Engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN.

They have some of the best brains on the planet working on their constantly evolving algorithms, trying to give searchers at their engines relevent answers. Which in turn pleases their advertisers by generating yet more traffic to their engines, generating yet more profit.

So what you should be working on, rather than getting caught up in the world of SEO, is developing relevant, quality content. This is where you should be putting your time and money - putting together information that is useful to your visitors.

I'm not saying that SEO is redundant - far from it - but the impact of SEO will continue to diminish over time.

I'd recommend reading a few good articles on researching keywords, then read about incorporating those realistically into your content. Then write, write, write.

Search Engine Optimization and Link Development go hand-in-hand when optimizing your website for the search engines. Google looks to your link popularity and relevancy when deciding what Page Rank to give each page, and where to place your website in the SERP's (Search Engine Results Pages).

Google reckons that if you have got backlinks, you've got credibility. But it's not a numbers game, like some SEOers will tell you. One GOOD backlink ie. one from an authorititive website, could be worth a thousand from a 'bad neighborhood'. And you will only get good backlinks or inbound links by having quality content on your site.

You can check your current link popularity visiting the search engines and typing the command. For example at Google you would type link:www.yourdomain.com, at Yahoo you would type linkdomain:www.yourdomain.com. You can also use one of the many tools out there, and make your job easier. Marketleap gives you the result of the main engines.

Here are some of the best ways to get new backlinks:
Emails – You search for appropriate, similarly themed websites and email the webmaster asking for a link trade. This can be very time consuming, but conducting one-to-one, personal approaches is one of the best ways to trade links as it conveys your sincerity. Don't let yourself get deterred by rejections, especially if you've got a low PR (Page Ranking).

• Write Articles – A great way for gathering non-reciprocal links. The more knowledgeable you are on your subject, the better. Many people use articles as a free and quick way to add content to their sites. They will post your article, which includes your URL as a credit, so if your article is popular you can get loads of new backlinks every day.

These are some of the best places to submit your articles:

You also need to selectively submit your website to Directories (as opposed to Search Engines). Read this useful article on Directory Submission that explains the best way to go about it.

• Link directories – There are numerous good directories where you can find websites that are looking for link trades. Searching for links can be incredibly time-consuming, so this is a good option to save time. I recommend you try:

  • ValueExchange is by far the best Link Exchange website, and it's free:

You can try these sites too, but use the pay option to eliminate off-topic, junk requests:

It works like this: you submit your site, and once it is approved you get the chance to make 10 link trade requests per day (if you are only interested in trading with related websites, this amount would be enough). Once you find a site in their directory to trade links with, you add it to your cart, when you have 10 links, you “check out”, and linkmarket will email those sites saying that you are interested in trading links. If the other sites approve it, linkmarket will email you back and tell you to put up the links, and then email the other sites asking them to put your link up. Their pay service is only $18- per annum

Forums – This is the easiest one: you post the details of your site and the type of trade you are looking for, and wait for interested people to get in touch with you.
Here are the great forums for trading links:

When trading links, don't just include your domain name. Use some good anchor text. Anchor text is usually the keyword you are targeting, so instead of trading links and having it look like "www.yourdomain.com", use one with your keyword, like "widgets".
And vary your anchor text. Try to use at least 3 diferent ones, so you can target different keywords, so Google won't interpret your links as spam.

Some specific links for Related Sites:

1) a decent PR (Page Ranking), so the pages with the listings are at least spidered and cached by Google.
2) can't have any sort of "work around's" for not counting as a "real" link (ie js redirects)
3) URL's for the categories must be SE friendly
4) must have a free submission option
5) can't require a reciprocal link
6) it can't be free only for editors

General/all-purpose directories:

Directories with special circumstances:

other resources to check out:

  • http://dmoz.org/Reference/Directories/ (great list of specialized topic-specific directories)
so, if you want, start submitting to those directories. It has also been suggested that you LINK TO THESE DIRECTORIES. This will show directories that we appreciate spiderable, free directories. it could motivate others to move in the same direction, and it'd also increase the overall PR of each directory and help us all in the long term.

Here are more important sites for SEO newbie's. Articles, tools, etc. that should be first-reads. Many of these will answer the most commonly asked questions in the forum. Get these facts under your belt, and you'll instantly gain considerable SEO knowledge. It will take lots more reading, experimenting, and practicing before you gain all the knowledge you need (and in fact, that is a never-ending process), but this should definitely jumpstart the learning curve for you.
